SMRC/Waterways Ireland Open Day

Maybe you've seen some of Limerick's many rowers training on the river and thought you'd love to give it a go, or maybe you'd like to see what it's like to "pull like a dog" like the Olympic silver medal winning O'Donovan brothers, or our own Olympian Sinead Lynch? Either way why not drop into St. Michael's Rowing Club on October 23rd, and we'll give you a chance to share the experience at a much more relaxed rate!

You'll get a bit of moderate exercise in a beautiful environment, as well as seeing the city from the totally new perspective of being on the river. Our experienced coaches and launch drivers will be there to ensure safety as well as offer information on the sport.

It's free, thanks to the generous support of Waterways Ireland, and you must be at least 14yrs old to try it out. There is no upper age limit!

If you intend coming along and if you're on Facebook, please click here so we can keep you posted on any developments.

You may also drop us an email:
Email or just drop in on the day. We'd be delighted to show you what all the fuss is about.

2016 SMRC Urban Run

What a day!!
A quick note to thank all who turned up and ran our 10k & 5k events today, ye were all fantastic. Like last year, unseasonably warm for October, but nobody was complaining! Thanks to all our marshals, bakers, volunteers, timers, water-station crews and all who made the day go so well again this year.

Results were posted online by Titan Sports shortly after the event; find them here

Photos from our great snappers Stephen Kiely (Just Look At The Lens Photography) and David Lane (Memory Lane Photography) are here.
Thank you both for your time, effort and talent.

We're looking forward to a great day.

SMRC at Rio & Urban Run 2016

Sinead and Claire have made Irish rowing history! They're the first Irish women's crew to make an olympic final and we're all so proud of this achievment. They trained and rowed like heroes to get to this level and even though they're not in the medals, they should be very pleased with their performance, as well as being just the kind of people that make great role models for younger sports people, not just in St. Michael's. Very well done.

There was a great turnout of over 100 people for the final in the Club and we're grateful to the press who came along to show us at our best, especially Theresa Mannion and the RTE Galway camera & satellite crews.

Irish Examiner article

The mighty Skibbereen boys Gary and Paul O'Donovan; what new is there to say? Silver medal in Leightweight double and they're also media favourites with their witty banter and casual attitude. So modest and really super guys. Well done the lads!

In other news, registration for the 4th annual SMRC Urban Run opened today.

This is a great event for the serious athletes as much as for keep fit and family entrants. We look forward to seeing another great field on October 9th.

We send our very best wishes to Sinead Jennings and indeed all the athletes competing for Team Ireland at the Olympic Games 2016.

Well done to Ben McKeown who rowed in the men's junior eight and all the Irish team. The Irish junior men were second overall with 16 points, with the team also having to share the spot with Scotland who also finished with 16 points.

The St. Michael’s Head of the River scheduled for Saturday 12th March 2016 is cancelled.

St. Michael’s Rowing Club greatly regrets that due to recent increased water levels at O’Briensbridge it is now not possible to stage this year’s event.

Thanks to the huge amount of crews who showed interest in our event again this year. We very much appreciate your support and apologise for this unfortunate outcome, which is obviously out of our hands. Safety first folks!

SMRC Head of the River

St. Michael’s Rowing Club regrets that due to the recent severe weather we have to announce the cancellation of this years’ Head of the River event at O’Briensbridge, County Clare.

We hope to stage the event on an alternative date this year.

We apologise for this cancellation, however weather conditions has made the staging of the event on the 20th February’16 unsafe.

Thank you...

I would like to say a huge thanks to all who showed up yesterday for the guard of honour for Monty (Jim). It was an outstanding gathering of support for him and hugely appreciated by the family.

Thanks again, you all did the club proud.

SMRC President.

Jim Ahern R.I.P.

It was with great shock and sadness that we learnt of the untimely passing of our Vice President yesterday (Saturday 23rd).

Jim was the husband of our Captain Antoinette and brother of our coach Niall Ahern. Jim started rowing for the club as a schoolboy. His greatest rowing achievement however was stroking the 1984 Intermediate Championship winning eight. In recent years he was ever present in the club as Captain, coach and helping out wherever he was needed. He will be sadly missed by his wife Antoinette, son David and daughters Ellen and Emily as well as his large circle of family and friends to whom we extend our sincere condolences.

Funeral arrangements to follow.
