SMRC Summer Rowing Camps

St. Michael’s crews are returning to the water in phases & the regatta schedule is being moved out for competitions to take place in August & September.

We are putting the plans together for our Summer Rowing Camps for boys & girls aged 12+.

Our first series of camps will focus on boys & girls ages 14-16, coming from a sporting background, who are interested in learning to row with an aim to join our competitive crews straight away.

Our second series of camps are 'Introduction to Rowing' camps & are open for ages 12+. These camps will combine learning to row, running, yoga, stretching & fun competitive team activity. It’s the ideal way for kids to try out the sport & leads into our 'Learn to Row' programme in September when the new season begins.

Dates & times are not yet confirmed but to express an interest in attending a camp or for more details please email us here

** All of our planning is in line with government guidelines & may be subject to change.

SMRC Covid Statement & Guidance Document
UPDATED 16/5/2020

SMRC has been working to publish a document to guide us through a safe, phased return to rowing, underpinned by HSE, government and Rowing Ireland regulations, principles and advice. We're all very keen to row and to train and this draft is currently how we propose to do just that.

For the safety of us all it is imperative that members read, understand and follow these procedures.

Please also see a link to Rowing Ireland relevant information.

Thanks to the members who put their time and experience into these documents.

Christy Hardiman, RIP

We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Christy Hardiman. Christy competed with the club with distinction in the late 1940's and early 1950's before transferring his considerable energies to the administration of the club. He was Captain in 1955 and served on the committee for many years. He was a Trustee of the club and an Honorary Life Member.

Due to Covid restrictions we are unable to pay our respect at the funeral but the club flag is flying at half-mast.

Kay Hamilton, RIP

The President, Committee & Members of St. Michael’s RC extend their deepest sympathies to our former club President Christy Moloney and his family on the recent passing of his sister Kay Hamilton.

May She Rest in Peace

Jennifer Leddin, RIP

The members and committee of St Michael's Rowing Club wish to express their sincere sympathies to Austin Leddin, his wife Kaye and daughter Aoife on the death of their daughter Jennifer after a long illness.

Austin was a member of the clubs first crew to win a National Championship when they won the Junior 18 men's eight in 1979. Austin and Kaye have both been long time supporters of the club and Austin is a regular umpire at regattas around the country. Jennifer was interested in becoming a vet and was an accomplished drummer. Jennifer will be sadly missed by her sister Aoife, Austin, Kaye and the entire Leddin family and their wide circle of friends. Due to the current restrictions, Jennifer's funeral will be private and there will be a memorial service at a later date.

Imelda O’Connor, RIP

The members and committee of St. Michael’s Rowing Club, Limerick would like to express their sincere sympathies to Imelda’s husband Tom O’Connor and all her children, son in law Simon, grandchild Harry, sisters, brothers and extended family and friends. Imelda passed away on Easter Sunday and was laid to rest in Glin on Tuesday after a private family mass. Imelda was originally from Co. Monaghan and had settled in Limerick near the club with her husband Tom and loving family of Johanna, Ceara, Thomas, Michael, Patrick, James, Mary and John.

Imelda and Tom almost filled an eight for the club with their long line of children who rowed over the last 15 years since Ceara led the way. What everyone will remember of Imelda is her smile and genuine friendliness to everyone as she arrived in the family bus to and from training or races. The O’Connor girls and boys have been part of some great crews. More importantly they have built great lifelong friendships and bonds within the club over the years. Now is when those friendships are needed most to reach out and be there for the family. We also remember the Ballincollig branch of the family who run Dan Sheehan’s bar and restaurant and who we met every year at the championships.

Due to the current restrictions in travel and gatherings many members who would have been there to meet Tom and the family were unable to do so. We want to take this opportunity to express our sympathies and let you know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

RI Flexibility Session

As most of our athletes are currently doing much more land based training that they have been used to we have put together a simple flexibility document in order to help with your session or add to what you are already doing.

Please reinforce the importance of this as it can often be the first thing to be forgotten or ignored by some when training alone.

Covid19 Statement

You may download our official SMRC Covid19 policy here or read it below.

Dear Members,
As the Government response to address the growing COVID19 situation continues, we as a sporting club also need to take the appropriate measures to protect not just you, our members, but also all your friends and families. This is an unprecedented situation and as such it requires unprecedented actions to address.

In light of the government announcement to close schools etc. we have taken the decision to cancel St. Michael’s Head of the River scheduled for Saturday 21st March. It is likely that Rowing Ireland will be cancelling or postponing any other upcoming events also until the situation improves so we will try and keep you informed of this.

Furthermore we have decided to suspend all training from SMRC until further notice (from tomorrow March 13th).

Coaches have been asked to review squads programmes and suggest other running, PT, kettlebells etc. sessions that rowers can do from home if they wish to maintain their fitness.

Some arrangements will also be made to provide, where available, some of the club’s equipment, ergs etc., to members to bring home for their use. If you or a family member do become effected by Covid19, it is important you follow the HSE guidelines in this regard and please let us know so that we can advise others who may have been in contact and who may need to seek medical help or to self-isolate. All info will be treated as confidential. As a general point, we would remind everyone to follow the advice of the experts in HSE/HSPC on general hygiene etiquette and travel.

HSE information here

This is a fast moving and evolving situation and we will keep these decisions under review and keep you informed when anything changes . If anyone has any concerns related to these issues and the club please feel free to contact myself and the committee. Thank you for your help and support as we all work together to protect not only ourselves but also our families.

Sláinte mhaith daoibh go léir / Good health to you all.

Take Care,
Mike McDonagh (Captain)
Mike O’Dwyer (President)
