another membership year has begun and we are embarking on a major initiative to make it easier for you and the committee to manage membership subscriptions (registrations) and rackage payments for the current year. We are also introducing a new category of membership for the rowing club of country/overseas member for members living over 100km from Limerick for the bargain rate of €50 for which you can enjoy the full facilities of the club while visiting Limerick.
This year for the first time we are activating an online payment system. We are encouraging as many members as possible to register online. As well as making it more convenient to make payments for you with a choice of payment methods, the online system will help the committee to better manage the membership and rackage process and avoid the risks of handling cash etc.
To avail of this service, just click on link below, then in the website click on "Registrations" and follow the steps. Members with private boats must pay rackage at the time of renewal of membership.
We use the funds generated from membership fees to continually improve our facilities and for the day to day running of the club. In order to facilitate the transition to an online system we have extended the deadline for payment of membership and rackage to Oct 31. Many of you will be aware of the changed financial circumstances of the club this year. It is vital that everyone pays their dues by this deadline to remain a member of the club and to continue to avail of the facilities. Failure to pay by Oct 31 will result in exclusion from club facilities.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation...
The General Committee.
to all our members, parents and friends who came to our Club BBQ, on the last fine day of summer! It was great to see so many familiar and new faces enjoying themselves. Good food and great company are the best recipe for a successful party.
I would also like to thank everyone who helped out on the days leading up to the BBQ. From transporting tables and chairs, plates, cleaning, baking, cooking, sound production, transformation of gym, setting up the gazebo, and washing all those plates and cutlery. And of course the big clean up the following day! It was hard work but worth it.
Thank you to all those who gave spot prizes, they were very much appreciated, especially by those who won them.
I would also like to remind you about our upcoming Christmas Party in December. Last year we held our first Family Xmas Party in the Club. It was brilliant! Ask anyone who was there. All details will be posted on the website during the month of November, so book your tickets early!
Thank you again to everyone. See you at the next Club Celebration...
SMRC – IRISH COASTAL CHAMPIONS 2012 -
In 2011 the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation initiated a race for Coastal Quads at the All Ireland Championships in Kilrane Wexford. On that occasion St Michael’s dominated and won both the CM4X+ and the CW4X+ races. This year the All Ireland event was in Courtmacsherry Cork and the club were determined to try and retain their titles. The course was triangular with a length of 4.5km.
The conditions were challenging with some heavy swells. In the CW4X+, the SMRC crew took an early lead. This they held throughout the race and eventually won by about 8 lengths to retain their title. In the CM4X+, SMRC established third place before the first turn.
The race was won by Courtmacsherry and Ring who were about 10 lengths ahead of SMRC who were a further 10 lengths of 4th and 5th. A very credible result. The crews were: CW4X+ - S.Clavin, O.McEvoy, H.McCarthy, E.Sherin, CM4X+ - G.Moore, G.Mahon, R.Murphy, E.Despard. Both crews were coxed by the indomitable Bermard O’Halloran. Chief D’Equipe/Driver/General Dogs Body was Kieran Kerr. Congrats to all concerned.

SMRC MEMBERS PEAK ON TIME -
On Wednesday this week, SMRC members Caoimhe and Declan Hartnett reached the 5985m summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.
While we're not 100% certain what mobile phone provider covers this popular tourist destination, Declan posted this modest but triumphant message on his Facebook page:
"We made it. The most physically exhausting thing I have ever done and I think Caoimhe would agree. Up to last night she said so far it wasn't as bad as a rowing 2k test but that's changed now. We are safe and well and halfway down the mountain already. Will be back in our hotel tomorrow afternoon."
The latest update we have reports 3.5 bars of soap and 108.7 gallons of piping hot water used to purge the pair of Tanzanian dirt, creatures and general hummm, and an even more challenging quest afterwards: that of finding a bar!
Congratulations Caoimhe & Declan, a heroic feat indeed...
KATE'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUT -
St. Michael’s Rowing Club’s Kate O’Brien represented Ireland at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria last weekend.
O’Brien was selected for the Irish squad in June after a grueling winter’s training and competition in rigorous trials. She was selected to race in the junior women’s single sculls event, one of the most competitive events of the championships.
Racing from her quarter final:
Kate O’Brien and Lovisa Claesson of Sweden (left) & Laura Oprea of Romania (right)

SMRC MEMBER COMPETES IN LONDON 2012...
Best wishes to club member Sean O’Neill who strokes the New Zealand coxless four at the Olympic regatta in London next week. Sean is unique in that he competed in the same event in Beijing representing Ireland.
CONTROVERSY AT CARDIFF...
There was a dramatic finish to the mens senior eights race as can be seen from the photo below. The Irish eight which had Aidan McEvoy, Mark O'Brien, Paddy Quinn and Declan O'Connor on board were pipped on the line for 1st place.
The crew protested loudly that the umpire should take a trip to Specsavers and that the photo finish was pointing the wrong way as Ireland had clearly won. A regatta official was threatened with GBH when he suggested that "perhaps the crew should have pulled harder". Declan O'Connor was seen taking a picture of the photo finish on his phone. Apparently it will be posted on the wall in front of his erg during the winter as inspiration to pull hard enough next year!
The crews on the photo finish are: Eng - lane 1, Ire - lane 2, Wales - lane 3

INTERMEDIATE W4 WINS AT CHAMPS...
The SMRC Women's Intermediate coxed four entered the history books at the weekend by becoming the first club crew to win the womens intermediate championship last weekend.
Having won easily in their heat the girls stamped their authority on the final and took an early lead which they extended with every stroke.
The crew was:
Bow - Jessica O’Keeffe
2 – Ailish Sheehan
3 – Orla McEvoy
Stk – Aoife Leahy
Cox – Aobhin Ryan
This was the club’s 46th Championship and the club flag was flying proudly over the club to let the citizens of Limerick know of our accomplishment...
The Club is hosting a Coffee Morning on Saturday 7th July during and after training. One of our rowers, Caoimhe Hartnett, is fundraising for Crumlin Hospital by climbing Kilimanjaro in August.
The Coffee Morning will help Caoimhe reach her final target for this worthy cause. We will be serving tea and coffee with some home baking for €2. All are welcome and please bring a friend. As always, your support is greatly appreciated.
New pages are now published providing SMRC-only men's and women's results with links from the Results page.

SMRC 1st FOR IRELAND -
Every year between 80 and 100 international recreational rowers gather together to participate in 'the FISA Tour'. The event takes place over a week with rowing for three days, a break day and a further three days rowing.
This event has never been hosted in Ireland. All that will however change in 2013 when St Michael’s will host the tour. It will take place in June under the Chairmanship of Mike O’Dwyer. The participants will be based in Athlone for the first few days and in Limerick for the final four days.
The rowing in coxed four pleasure boats will commence in Carrick on Shannon and will finish at St Michael’s where it is hoped to host the final Dinner in the club.
One of the highlights of the tour will be the decent through the elevators in the Ardnacrusha Power Station.
The hosting of this event by St Michael’s shows once again the progressive nature of the club. It also speaks volumes for the commitment of the volunteers in the club that they are capable of organising an event of this scale.
FOR FORMER SMRC MEMBER -
Congratulations to Sean O’Neill who has been named in the New Zealand Men’s four for the London Olympics. In 2008 Sean, who was rowing for St Michael’s at the time, was in the Irish Men’s four in Beijing.
