SMRC Urban Run helps Crumlin

Party thanks

Thank you to everybody who helped make this year's Xmas Party a great success, especially our Caterers Adrian & Marie Spellman who served up a gorgeous menu and to our Musicians Jordyn and Josh Spellman, they were brilliant! Also, our DJ Peter Waldron, MC Decky O'Connor and Sheila Clavin for hosting our Raffle and members who sponsored the spot prizes. Credit also goes to our Captain for all the outdoor Xmas lights and to all the Juniors, Coaches Barry & Fish and the Recs who helped with the preparations. Thanks to Mary & Donal who helped with the dreaded clean up the day after!

A note of thanks to Eilis McDonnell for designing all our Xmas stationary and to Julie Long for sponsoring the printing. And of course, thank you to Ado who supplied the PA system, otherwise we would not have been able to hear Austin's speech!

Thanks to everyone who supported the Club by purchasing a ticket. Hope to see you all again next year. Happy Xmas to All.

SMRC site development

Dear Members, Past Members and Supporters;

For some time we have identified the need for non-tidal facilities as a key to improving our competitiveness and for the development of all our athletes. Recently we completed the purchase of a site adjacent to the Limerick Regatta Committee regatta enclosure field in O'Briensbridge. This now gives us the opportunity to develop our own facility and permanent access to the best stretch of rowing water in the country. The challenge now is to develop those facilities at a time when we have financial constraints following the purchase itself and a restructuring of other club operations we are implementing at considerable cost.

To get a head start on developing our new site we are offering Life Memberships at half the usual cost i.e. €1000 until 31 December 2013. The offer is open to all currently subscribed members, past members looking for a way to re-engage with the club and and any interested supporters. We hope with a good take up of this offer that we can start developing the site early in the new year so that all can obtain some benefit from it as soon as possible otherwise we will have no choice but to delay development until we have sufficient funds.

This is a great opportunity to get behind a game-changing project for the club and great value. If you are interested, please contact any member of the committee listed below who will be happy to make the arrangements.

Thanks for your support,

The Committee.

URBAN RUN registration & volunteering

There will be a registration night for all SMRC members/family members on Wed 25th, from 5pm to 7pm in the Club, who haven't registered on line. If you haven't registered on line by this date, please please make the effort to register at the Club.

If you are not running or walking the event, I'd appreciate if you would volunteer as a Marshal. I NEED 20 more Marshals, so don't be shy, volunteer yourself or a family member, to help make the Urban Run another great St. Michaels annual event.

You can contact me at 086.819.0811 to volunteer.

BBQ thanks

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Gathering a great success last Sunday. Our Club welcomed over 250 people, including members, past members, parents and friends. Also present, was our special guest Minister of Finance Michael Noonan, who attended the blessing of our 3 new boats, purchased with the aid of Lottery Funding.

All our guests, the great food and champagne (as featured in some photos!) and the weather, made this a memorable day for everyone. Photos of the event to follow soon.

As always, Thank You my friends the Rec Rowers and Phil Ryan who helped with the organisation and running of the event. It would not have been possible without them.

See you all at the Urban Run on September 29th and of course at the next party, the Xmas Party.

As many of you know, in addition to the website gallery, SMRC has an extensive Picassa Photo Gallery with many photographs covering the last century of rowing. It can be found here.

It is hoped that in the not too distant future the photographs in Cecil Street will be copied and added to the gallery. We would love to receive any additional photos that you may have under the bed or in the attic. You can do this one of two ways. Firstly you can scan the photograph yourself and email it to us.

Alternatively you can bring them to the Club (The Gathering BBQ would be a good opportunity) and we will scan them and return the originals to you within a day. For further information please email Kieran Kerr

John Woodland RIP

It is with great sadness that we learnt today of the passing of John Woodland who has been our Club Caretaker for a number of years.

John was a constant presence in the club and was always willing to help out. It is only in the coming days and weeks that we will appreciate how much we relied on him. At this time our prayers are with his wife and family in their time of grief.

SMRC Head rescheduled

Rescheduled date: March 22nd, 2013

All clubs will be refunded and must now re-enter.

SMRC Strategic Planning

in any organization, strategic planning is a key element to ensuring that key objectives are identified and the necessary steps put in place to achieve these. Over the past decade the seeds of much of the success that the club has enjoyed can trace its origins to actions planned at strategic planning sessions.

As with any strategic plan, it must be a living document and must be reviewed and renewed periodically. The Club is currently embarking on a review of the Club’s strategic plan. This will take place in the Committee (Erg) room in two sessions. These are planned for 19:30 on Wednesday 20th February and a follow-up session on Wednesday 6th March. All members are welcome to participate in one or both sessions.

Austin Reid

St. Michael's Head Cancelled

Due to the high water volumes on the Shannon Navigation, the ESB are unable to close the gates at Parteen weir above O'Briensbridge.

As a result, St. Michael's consider that the river is not safe to run a Head. A decision on an alternative date will be made shortly following discussions with the Domestic Events Committee.

HoR 2013 - Volunteer Call

We are asking parents, friends and rowers to help us out with our fundraising efforts at this year's Head. Many of you are already working in our Shop in OBB and others are making sandwiches. But, we need a lot more people to bake for us.

Please contact Antoinette if you can help out. All baked goods are welcome. Please text or ring if you can help, so arrangements for delivery can be made.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support and help...

SMRC HOR this year is offering an incentive for Clubs/Crews to race longer throughout the day on Saturday, and avail of training in O’Briens Bridge the following day.

Our normal security arrangements for the head will be extended to include Saturday night so if clubs want, they can leave boats rigged overnight and go for a training/recovery spin on Sunday in O'Briens Bridge, then pack up and leave for home.
There will be a Rowers party organised in The Blind Pig on Fox's Bow. We are currently contacting Hostels/Hotels/B&B's in Limerick to get some reasonable deals for accommodation.

There will be a timetable of coaching launch availability made for the Sunday (provisionally 2 hour slots, depending on club interest). Same traffic pattern will apply as Saturday.

For any information or questions on this matter, please contact Declan O’Connor.

FISA 2013 comes to Ireland
and SMRC is proud to be selected to host this exciting event for recreational rowers.

Please go to the FISA 2013 page for more information.

Dear Members,
another membership year has begun and we are embarking on a major initiative to make it easier for you and the committee to manage membership subscriptions (registrations) and rackage payments for the current year. We are also introducing a new category of membership for the rowing club of country/overseas member for members living over 100km from Limerick for the bargain rate of €50 for which you can enjoy the full facilities of the club while visiting Limerick.

This year for the first time we are activating an online payment system. We are encouraging as many members as possible to register online. As well as making it more convenient to make payments for you with a choice of payment methods, the online system will help the committee to better manage the membership and rackage process and avoid the risks of handling cash etc.

To avail of this service, just click on link below, then in the website click on "Registrations" and follow the steps. Members with private boats must pay rackage at the time of renewal of membership.

We use the funds generated from membership fees to continually improve our facilities and for the day to day running of the club. In order to facilitate the transition to an online system we have extended the deadline for payment of membership and rackage to Oct 31. Many of you will be aware of the changed financial circumstances of the club this year. It is vital that everyone pays their dues by this deadline to remain a member of the club and to continue to avail of the facilities. Failure to pay by Oct 31 will result in exclusion from club facilities.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation...

The General Committee.
