Happy New Year & latest news

Happy New Year from all of us here at St. Michael's Rowing Club. We're really looking forward to this year's rowing which begins for us on Feb 24th and 25th with the SMRC Head of the River.

Typo? Nope, this year's HoR is a 2-day event. It's a new format and we'll have all the details here and on social media this week. In addition to 2 days of rowing, we're inviting everyone to come along on the Saturday evening to warm up, have some food and enjoy some very special entertainment, all laid on specifically for us. Details coming up soon...

Our Christmas Raffle draw was held on Sunday morning and here are some of the winners:
*1st Prize - 32” TV & XBox One Console - Ian Neville, seller - Ian Neville.
*2nd Prize - €100 One 4 All Voucher - Tony O’Gorman, seller - Chris Kirwan.
*3rd Prize - €75 One 4 All Voucher - Liam Dunne, seller - Ciaran Foster.
*4th Prize - €50 One 4 All Voucher - Claire Murphy, seller Meabh Ni Bhrian.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the raffle including our sponsors, our sellers & everyone who bought tickets. Over €2,000 was raised! We feel an annual event coming on so bigger and better in 2018. The full list is on our Facebook page.

L - R Stuart Mc Donnell, Ger Purcell, Vinny O’Driscoll, Frank Corr (President of Young Munsters RFC, John Hayes, Brian Richardson (Captain of St. Michael's) Mickey Moore, John O’Connell (Hon Treasurer of St Michael’s) & Noel Killbridge.

SMRC 1 - 1 Young Munster

On Friday, January 5th St. Michael's were guests of honour at Young Munster RFC to mark the longstanding and successful link between our two great sporting clubs. Young Munster President Frank Corr, who himself was involved in St. Michael's Tennis Table Club for years, welcomed Club Captain Brian Richardson, Hon.Treasurer John O’Connell (a Young Munster man) and Coach Justin Sherin to the club and pre match dinner as Young Munsters took on local rivals Garryowen.

Richie presented Frank with a framed St. Michael's oar and in his speech recalled the many legends of both sports who cemented the clubs bonds over the years. On hand to mark the celebration were the St. Michael's Masters crew and many of those who had dual sports of wintering with rugby and summering with Rowing.

What a fantastic way to kick off the new year. Frank concluded our visit by wishing us every success for the season ahead and it’s his hope to see an invite to the Championship Winning celebratory dinner dance later in the year. So... no pressure or anything.

And... Young Munsters won 25-0. Let’s hope their success on the night bodes well for our season ahead.

SMRC Urban Run 2017

The SMRC 2017 Urban Run is on october 8th this year and looks like being as big as ever. It's our main fundraising event at St. Michael's and we're very happy that Sherry Fitzgerald have come on board as our main sponsor again. Thanks to their team in their Limerick office.

We get great feedback from runners every year on the flat course which is just the job for a Personal Best (PB), and also clear markings, great stewarding and water stations, catering and changing facilities in the Clubhouse. All of this is done by our hard working volunteers and we'd be delighted if you'd sign up and help run the show if you're not out on the course.
Please contact Antoinette at

We have 5th yr. runners, and we welcome athletic clubs, our local schools, Laurel Hill Colaiste & Laurel Hill TY students who are entering the 5k. Great flat, fast course for a PB for all these and a great way to make some new running friends too.

Please help spread the word amongst your friends, colleagues at work, everyone... We cater for solo entrants and also teams, schools, etc.

Online registration is live and you may also register by cheque. Details and form are on the site also.

We're looking forward to a great day.

Well rowed SMRC!

As another season draws to a close, St Michael's would like to thank all our rowers and coaches for their commitment and dedication throughout the season. We may not have those elusive pots to celebrate after the Champs but we had a great season with many successes.

A huge thank you to all the support team including those who rowed the trailers to events and in and out to OBB. Well done to the 2017 committee, the club has never looked so well or been so well equipped for the crews.

Thank you also to the parents and families for their understanding and patience for the early starts, the wet training gear and the dramatic increase in the household budget assigned to pasta.

It takes an army to keep this club going from strength to strength and we appreciate everyone's efforts.

Time now to unload the trailer, take a break and enjoy the summer sun. We'll be back for another round of madness, building on the past season, maintaining what we do well and improving on the areas that need improving on. We will be back bigger, stronger and better season on season.

Well rowed St Michael's!

SMRC Summer Camps

Our camps will start on two dates in August.
Camp 1: Monday July 31sth @ 11:00 am - Thursday 3rd
Camp 2: Monday Aug 14th @ 08:30 am - Thursday 17th
Cost: €100 for first child and €80 thereafter.

Each day is a four hour block. Start times will change gradually with the tide.
We aim to offer the complete introductory rowing experience to your child:
· Water Safety
· Boat handling & care
· Indoor rowing
· Warm-up & Stretching
· Running
· PT - physical training
· Barbeques
· Sunshine (don't hold your breath on this one!)

On top of this we get the kids to compete on the indoor rowers and get a feel for real races!

Rowing is a demanding sport that requires commitment from athletes, parents and coaches. Fitness is essential as is attendance and participation. We've added the running, warm-up, PT & stretching elements so that your kids get an insight into what the life of a rower really is.

Attendance on SMRC Rowing camps does not entitle you to membership however it is a first step for Junior Rowers.

It is essential that your child can swim and does not have any ailment or condition that could prevent him/her from rowing or be a subsequent danger to themselves, other children or their instructors. The instructors will do their utmost to safeguard your children but need to know anything that may be of cause for concern. If in doubt, just ask.

If your child requires regular medication for whatever reason, please notify us .

** NEW **
You may download the application form here

I'm sure there's plenty more you'd like to know, if so email me here and I'll try to answer your questions.

Joe Cantillon,
SMRC Junior Development Coach.

2017 Legends of Sport award

On behalf of the committee, members, families & friends of St. Michael's Rowing Club, I want to send our heartiest congratulations to Sinéad Jennings on her thoroughly deserving 2017 Legends of Sport award.

Sinéad epitomises the Olympic beliefs and her unrelenting hard work, determination and attitude are an inspiration to the club and rowing nationally and internationally. This award acknowledges Sinéad's role as an ambassador for not just Rowing but also for St.Michael's, Limerick, Donegal & Ireland.

Congratulations Sinéad from all at your club, St. Michael's.

Yours in Rowing,
SMRC President

We are very disappointed to announce that our Head of the River has been cancelled due to excessive flow and water levels on the course. It would be unsafe to proceed.

We realise this is a major upset for a lot of people, not just ourselves, and we're in the process of trying to arrange an alternative date. If successful, everyone will be notified by the normal channels; Rowing Ireland etc.

We thank all those who entered and volunteered, and assure you we'll do our very best to re-schedule this great event.

SMRC 2017 Head of the River

The SMRC Head of the River is the weekend after next, February 25th. The weather has been great lately and conditions at 'the Bridge' perfect for training and a gruelling competition hopefully.

We need extra support for this event, families and friends too as well as our members. Volunteers are needed for catering also, not just the field and water duties, so please make yourself known to Captain Antoinette or head honcho Pierce as soon as possible.

As always, we provide a healthy and appropriate menu for the crews, with hot meals freshly prepared on-site.

Thank you.

SMRC Pontoon Project

The Club has started work on our most ambitious capital project ever, the building of a new state-of-the-art floating pontoon slip in O’Callaghan Strand. The new slip will allow us to launch several boats simultaneously as well as being a major improvement from a rower safety and boat handling perspective.

Work has already started with the removal of our old slip and preparations for the pilings for the new slip are now underway. The foundations for the piles were completed this week. The entire project including the installation of the access gantry and pontoons should be complete by the end of March, just in time for Spring rowing.

It's a very exciting time for SMRC and we need all the support we can muster. We need widespread support of our fundraising efforts now more than ever.

** Play SMRC Lotto **

We are very grateful for our support so far, especially for this project. We're almost there.

Also we must give a special mention to the driving force and 'energiser bunny' behind this enterprise, Pierce McGann. We couldn't do any of this without you Pierce, thank you from us all at SMRC.
